ONLY ONE CHANCE FOR FOSTER CARERS WARNS LAWYER

12/11/2009

Foster carers could be needlessly losing their rights to become long-term carers of children they foster by failing to seek professional advice. This is the message from family law specialist Ann-Marie Bowman, of Nottingham law firm Rothera Dowson.

The warning comes at a time when the number of applications for court orders to remove children from their parents has risen dramatically; thought to be a result of more stringent checks since the high-profile Baby P case.

Local authorities can refuse to support foster carers’ applications for residence, special guardianship and adoption orders, making them unlikely to be successful. This has led to fears that many foster carers are jeopardising their case for permanent rights due to a lack of good legal support.

Ann-Marie Bowman has represented carers who, without professional advice, may have had their children removed unnecessarily. She said “It’s heartbreaking to see children missing out on loving homes because their prospective parents haven’t had suitable legal support.

“Acting after children have been removed from their foster carers is too late, which is what makes it so important to seek professional advice beforehand.”

Rothera Dowson Solicitors, who have successfully represented foster carers in such cases, is offering a free 30 minute consultation where experienced legal practitioners can offer advice to foster carers who are considering pursuing court orders.
